Calling all Musicians
The Lehigh Concert Band is once again preparing to strike up the band for another season. This local community group is a non-profit organization that has existed since 1979 and provides the opportunity for residents of Lehigh Acres and Lee County to join together to perform free concerts and support ceremonial occasions in its local area. The Band’s musical season is from November to April and it gathers together every week to rehearse and fine tune a program of musical selections aimed at satisfying the pleasure of all concert band fans. They perform at least once a month in Lehigh Acres and South West Florida at festivals, churches, and retirement homes as a full concert band or in small groups. The current conductor, John Monachan, served 39 years in armed forces bands and retired in 2010 so he could enjoy the marvelous winters here in Lehigh Acres. Other members of the band, like Lynne Criss on saxophone and George Unverzagt on trumpet, were college and school music teachers who have a wealth of musical background to bring to the band performances. The musicians come from a variety of backgrounds and membership to the band is open to everyone, regardless of race, age, gender, or creed and can be as a musician or also as a patron or assistant.
The Band will perform at the St Raphael Fall Festival on Saturday Nov 16th at 3:30 and at Faith Lutheran church on Sunday Nov 17th at 3:00 and like most other community bands in the area the November concerts will recognize the dedication and sacrifices of our armed forces men and women. Of course there will be a Christmas concert with seasonal selections and a sing along as well as the possibility of small groups being spotted in the Lehigh area playing Christmas carols. The January concert will feature some Broadway show tunes, February will be music of love and what would a March concert be without some St Patrick ’s Day music. The plan for the final concert of the season in April is to do a Boston Pops type format outside at Veteran’s Park. All concerts are free but donations are appreciated and form the majority of funding for ongoing operation of the Band.
Rehearsals have already started, and take place on Tuesday nights at Faith Lutheran church, 705 Leeland Blvd. Lehigh Acres with downbeat at 7:00 P.M. and wrapping up at @ 9:00 P.M. The band is hoping to fill out its sections with new members who are interested in displaying their musical talent in a fun, no stress atmosphere where the musicians can enjoy performing concert band music. If you love music like we do, we offer you the opportunity to meet interesting people and perform concerts for appreciative audiences. We are open to any concert band musician who can play at a high school or college level or above. If you or someone you know is interested in joining or supporting this local musical group please come to one of our rehearsals or concerts and see how you can fit into our organization or just enjoy the show.
