Child Struck by Vehicle
A 12-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle in Lehigh Acres just after 8:30 Thursday morning.
The accident happened at the intersection of 68th Street West and Sunshine Boulevard in Lehigh Acres.
According to the Lehigh Acres Fire Department, the boy was struck by a Toyota Camry, went airborne, smashed the passenger’s side windshield of the vehicle, and landed in the grass on the side of 68th Street W.
The child sustained injuries and was taken to Lee Memorial Trauma Center by Lehigh Acres Fire and Rescue Department ambulance.
According to Linda Harclerode, the neighborhood watch coordinator for the area stated that “We have issues with speeders down 68th Street West. Also, there is no street light at that school bus stop.”
Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.

We have had serious issues of speeders on 68th St. W. for several years. There are numerous bus stops all along the road. We have received 2 new streetlights this summer, but because the bus stops change locations each school year, children are STILL waiting for buses in the dark. Also, the width of the road can not allow two buses to pass each other at the same time. Add to the fact, there are no sidewalks, so pedestrians are forced off the road.
At one time, 68th ST. W. did not end at the last canal…it went through for drivers to get over to Cemetery Road. Many neighbors believe the traffic issues would greatly diminish if drivers and buses were able to head west instead of east to exit our community.
Changes need to be made – 68th St. W. is a MAIN road for hundreds of drivers each and every day. Our children and all of their buses also use this road.
We realize there is no “easy fix”, but we need the various agencies involved to work with us to make some necessary changes.
