Defending A-Sun Champs @FGCU_WSoccer Begins Defense of Its Title with Pair of Weekend Games
The defending Atlantic Sun Conference champion FGCU women’s soccer team (5-3-1) begins the defense of its title this weekend when it welcomes in a pair of A-Sun foes beginning with Jacksonville University (5-4-0) on Friday night under the lights of the FGCU Soccer Complex. The Eagles will then turnaround and host the University of North Florida (3-5-2) in a Sunday afternoon matinee.
The Green and Blue are coming off a pair of losses last weekend to a duo of high-powered teams in Memphis and UCF. Last Friday (Sept. 20) the Eagles saw their 13-game home unbeaten streak come to an end at the hands of Memphis. FGCU then traveled to UCF on Sunday (Sept. 22) and dropped its non-conference finale to the Knights, 4-0.
The Eagles took on a challenging non-conference slate this season. Following a 3-1 loss to then-No. 9 Florida on the road to kick of the 2013 campaign, the Green and Blue offense broke out for five goals in their home opener opposite Albany.
Then following a tie with Davidson, FGCU rattled off four-straight victories that culminated with a 5-1 victory over Idaho State in Hawai’i. In that game, Tabby Tindell (Ocala, Fla./Trinity Catholic HS) tallied a freshman record four goals, one shy of the all-time single game record. Her eight points in that game are also a freshman record.
Tindell currently leads the Eagles in goals (7) and points (15). Melissa Arnold (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional HS) has handed out a team-leading six assists. Eight other Eagles have tallied at least one goal with none scoring more than two. A total of 14 FGCU players have tallied a point so far this season. That is already two more than registered a point all of 2012.
Goalkeeper Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS) has started all nine games for the Eagles logging 821:33 minutes. She has registered 37 saves while allowing 11 goals for a 1.21 goals against average. Along with her 5-3-1 record, Brown can boast three shutouts.
The Dolphins roll into conference play coming off a pair of overtime games last weekend. They would split those games both resulting in a score of 2-1. Jacksonville can boast wins over Flagler, Niagara, Georgia State, Georgia Southern and FIU. Kaitlyn Bassett leads the team in minutes (727), goals (6), points (13), shots (41), shot percentage (.146), shots on goal (24) and game winning goals (3).
When Last They Met
The Eagles and Dolphins met on the pitch twice last season. The Eagles bested JU in the semifinals of the 2012 A-Sun tournament 2-0. That result was the first in favor of the Eagles in the history of the series which JU now leads 2-1-4. The victory for FGCU snapped a string of four-straight ties between the two programs.
Scouting North Florida
The Ospreys kicked off their 2013 campaign with a tie at Gardner-Webb before knocking off the College of Charleston 1-0. North Florida would then drop four-straight before defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 10-1 at home. A tie with Columbia, loss to Furman and 1-0 victory over South Alabama would round out their non-conference slate. The Ospreys have scored just 14 goals in 2013. Alexis Bredeau leads the way with three. Thea Linkfield follows with two goals.
When Last They Met
These two programs squared off at North Florida last season and saw the Ospreys come away with a 2-0 victory. It was the first victory in the series for UNF. The Eagles had led the series 5-0-1 prior to the match.
The Eagles will hit the road for a pair of games north of the Florida boarder next weekend. On Friday (Oct. 4) the Green and Blue will square off with Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m. On Sunday (Oct. 6) FGCU travels to Lipscomb for a 1 p.m. matinee.
