FGCU Athletics Schedule Updates Due To Hurricane Irma
Special to the Lehigh Acres Gazette
Due to the threat of Hurricane Irma’s landfall in Florida and up the Eastern Seaboard, several FGCU Athletics events over the coming days have been affected.
* The men’s soccer team’s home opener against VCU scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m.has been canceled. The two teams attempted to play the game at VCU and also at a neutral setting in Georgia, but the uncertain track of Irma ultimately led to the decision for the game to be canceled.
* Both the men’s and women’s golf teams will not be traveling to their season-opening tournaments. Both teams were supposed to head to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for respective Golfweek Program Challenge events Sunday-Tuesday. As of Wednesday afternoon, the tournament is still on as scheduled, but FGCU will not be competing.
* The men’s and women’s cross country teams will not be traveling to the Stan Sims Invitational in Cartersville, Ga. – about 45 miles northwest of Atlanta. As of Wednesdayafternoon, the meet is still on as scheduled, but FGCU will not be competing.
* The volleyball team’s tournament at Davidson (Friday and Saturday) and women’s soccer team’s games at Arizona (Friday) and Arizona State (Sunday) will be played as originally scheduled.
FGCU classes, operations and events are canceled for Thursday, Sept. 7, and Friday, Sept. 8, and continuing through the weekend. A decision is expected to be made at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10, regarding whether the University will reopen on Monday, Sept. 11, and an announcement will be made then.
