FGCU’s 21-0 Second-Half
Run Sparks Eagles Past Owls
The No. 1 seed FGCU Eagles extended its winning streak to 20 and remained undefeated in Atlantic Sun Women’s Basketball Championship at 4-0 with a dominating 73-47 victory vs. No. 8 seed Kennesaw State.
The Owls battled close with the Eagles until FGCU went on a 21-0 run in a six-minute span in the second half to push the Eagles lead to 64-38 with only five minutes remaining in the contest.
The Eagles’ Joyce Iamstrong led the game in scoring 23 points. FGCU captured 20 steals in the game; only three away from the championship record. Betsy Adams led the Eagles with five swipes. Brittany Kennedy, the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year, added six points, six rebounds and six assists to go along with two blocks and two steals for a solid all-around game.
Kennesaw State’s Sametria Gideon registered a team-high 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the 15th of the season and the . KSU’s Chantel Kennedy added 12 rebounds as the Owls outrebounded FGCU, 35-24, for a 14-6 advantage on second-half points.
FGCU has now won 40-straight contests against A-Sun competition dating back to the start of the 2011-12 conference season.
The Eagles advance to face the winner of No. 4 USC Upstate and No. 5 North Florida in the A-Sun Championship semifinal on March 8th at 12 p.m.
