FGCU’s Offense Powers Them to #ASunWBB Finale
Atlantic Sun Championship Semifinal to defeat fifth-seeded North Florida 73-44 on Friday.
Led by a record setting performance by senior guard Joyce Iamstrong, the Eagles extended the nation’s fourth-best winning streak to 21 and collected their 41st consecutive win over a conference opponent, which is second in the nation behind Baylor (46).
Iamstrong went a perfect 9-for-9 from the field to tie an A-Sun Championship record for field goal percentage. Iamstrong marked the second most attempts for the record only behind Georgia Southern’s Phylette Blake who went 10-for-10 vs. Florida A&M in 1988. The senior, Iamstrong scored 19 of the Eagles’ 27 first-half points after having a career-high 23 point night in the quarterfinal vs. Kennesaw State.
The Eagles hit 12 three-pointers in the game to set a new A-Sun Championship record that they had previously set in 2011′s semifinal and finals against Kennesaw State and Stetson. Iamstrong and teammate Jaime Gluesing combined for seven from behind the arc.
FGCU’s Brittany Kennedy, the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year, pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while adding a game-high eight assists.
A-Sun Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Sarah Hansen collected seven points, five rebounds and three steals for the Eagles. Hansen is only one point away from tying as the Eagles all-time point scorer with 1,415 points.
The Ospreys’ Ki Conner collected a team-high 11 points, while teammate Jadhken Kerr contributed ten rebounds to end UNF’s season with a 12-19 record. The Eagles improve to 27-5 on the season and have not recorded a loss since December 22nd to UCF.
FGCU, No. 11 in the CollegeInsider.com Women’s Mid-Major Poll, will go on to play in its second consecutive A-Sun Championship final in just their second year of post-season eligibility, where they will face the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 Stetson and No. 3 Mercer. The Atlantic Sun Championship is scheduled for Saturday at 5:30 PM and can be seen on CSS.
