Firefighters were called to Rose Garden Road near SW 6th Place in Cape Coral around 12:23 a.m. and arrived to find a sports car engulfed in flames after hitting a palm tree.
According to Battalion Chief Ken Ossowicz of the Cape Coral Fire Department, bystanders helped a woman passenger escape the car before firefighters arrived. She was taken to the Lee Memorial by Lee County EMS. Then Air Transported her to Tampa General Hospital burn center with life-threatening burns to more than 65 percent of her body.
The driver of the car was unable to escape and died inside the vehicle.
The woman has been identified as Susan Reynolds of Lehigh Acres.
The driver and the vehicle are unidentifiable at this time. Police say it may take days or even weeks to identify the driver.
Firefighters extinguished the fire within minutes and assisted Cape Coral police.
Cape Coral Police say the vehicle was heading north on Rose Garden Road and lost control while the roadway curved. The car rotated into the median where a tree struck the back of the vehicle, causing the fire.
