Med Center Contunes Sports Program Support

The Lehigh Regional Medical Center has agreed to continue the support of the athletic program at Lehigh High School, by providing a full time Athletic Trainer for the school’s athletes, as it has for the past several years.

It is required by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FSHAA) that schools have a trainer at home events for major sports such as football and basketball. However, Lehigh Senior High School is the only school to have a full time athletic trainer, and Lehigh Regional is the only health care facility in Lee County to provide this service.

Melissa Mathis, LAT, ATC, RNC, has recently joined the staff of Lehigh Regional Sports and Rehab (LSR) at Lehigh Regional, and is now the athletic trainer at Lehigh Senior High School. She has B.S. in Kinesology: Athletic Training from Northern Illinois University and completed her internship at the University of Hawaii-Hilo. Mathis worked for three and a third years for ATI Physical Therapy in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas, working with Rich East High School, Chicago Bandit’s Professional Softball, Brew City Bruises, Milwaukee Roller Derby, soccer club and gymnastics. She also performed Functional Medical Evaluations, and was a Director of the Work Conditioning program. Mathis moved to Florida recently to escape the cold.

“I can’t tell you how much we appreciate the support of Lehigh Regional. We are very fortunate to have such a community minded hospital in Lehigh. Many of our athletes have already benefited greatly by having Melissa here during practices and games,” said Lehigh High School Principal Jackie Corey.

Orthopedic Surgeon, Peter Curcione, MD, is the official team doctor and is assisted by his PA, Dan Delmont PAC.

“I am very proud to have the opportunity to provide this service to our young athletes. Dr. Curcione is the Chief of Staff at our hospital, and with Melissa on board we have a great team to take care of the students at Lehigh Senior High School,” said Joanie Jeannette, CEO, Lehigh Regional Medical Center.
