FGCU head men’s basketball coach Joe Dooley announced on Friday that Rayjon Tucker has been released from his scholarship and will not return to the team.
“After speaking with Rayjon, we are both in agreement that he needs a fresh start,” said Dooley. “We thank him for his two years with the team and wish him luck in his feature endeavors.”
A native of Charlotte, N.C., the 6-5 Tucker averaged 7.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game last year as a sophomore.
FGCU is coming off a record-setting 26-8 season in 2016-17, claiming a second-straight ASUN Tournament title and advancing to play its sixth NCAA Tournament game in the last five years.
The Eagles will still return the majority of their points, rebounds and assists next year as they welcome back five of their top eight scorers from last season’s squad, which set Division-I program single-season records in points per game (79.4), rebound margin (+5.4) and field goal percentage (.499; 5th-best in the nation). FGCU led the country in points in the paint per game (41.3) and finished 3rd in the nation with 159 dunks – 11 more than the original Dunk City Sweet Sixteen team in 2012-13.
Led by reigning ASUN Newcomer of the Year Brandon Goodwin (Norcross, Ga./UCF/Norcross HS), FGCU will have 6-10 Michigan transfer and Southwest Florida product Ricky Doyle (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) joining the lineup next year as a redshirt junior, in addition to 6-10 Miami and VCU transfer Michael Gilmore (Jacksonville, Fla./Rickards HS).
Additionally, high school senior Brian Thomas (Marietta, Ga./Kell HS), a 6-9 forward, rising 6-10 redshirt sophomore Brady Ernst (Clinton, Iowa/Indian Hills CC/Iowa State/Clinton HS), 3-point specialist and rising redshirt junior Dinero Mercurius (Orlando, Fla./Daytona State/UTRGV/USF/Faith Baptist Christian/University HS) and point guardDarnell Rogers (Fort Mill, S.C./Believe Prep/Indian Land HS/Shiloh HS) have also signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Green and Blue.
