Seat Now Open on
the Community Council
Special to the Lehigh Acres Gazette
A long-time activist and member of the Lehigh Acres Community Council has resigned leaving an opening in the “elected” seats that form the Community Council. Those that are interested in being holding this seat, can send their resume, or contact the board’s president, Tami Baker, to express their interest. Interest will be evaluated and an individual selected. She can be reached at LA Insurance on Lee Blvd. 239-369-6000 or http://www.lehighacrescommunitycouncil.com/
Board meetings are held on the third Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Sheriff’s station on Homestead Rd. (entrance and parking is through the back.) The public is always invited.
Since Lehigh Acres is an unincorporated area of Lee County, only Lee County controls the activity, projects, funding and ultimately the growth/or non-growth of Lehigh Acres. The “collective voice” of the Community Council (residents of Lehigh and appointed civic, social, and community officials) of Lehigh Acres is very important to “insure” Lehigh receives its fair-share of dollar allocation, and attention, from the Lee County governing body.
The elected members are comprised of a group of volunteers from the community that share their talents and time, working in conjunction with many other organizations and sub-committees such as the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce (business development) and The Architectural Zoning & Review Board, to name a few.
The common goal is for the betterment and overall improvements of Lehigh Acres.
There are a number of sub-committees that operate within the council on very interesting and important topics. As a member (or private citizen), you are welcome to join any one of these committees. Some of the council’s current committees are: Community Development, Roads and Transportation, Parks and Recreation, Beautification, Code Enforcement, Health, Education & Welfare, Youth Activities, Elections & Bylaws, Website Dev., Council Sponsored Events, Membership, and Publicity (communications).
The Community Council of Lehigh Acres has been in existence for well over 50 years, and as a whole, are comprised approximately 40 individuals. Half of those are being “appointed” members from various civic and social functions (i.e. the water department, the veterans’ association, the transportation department of Lee County to name only a few of the appointed seats). The other half are concerned citizens who have been elected “by the people” in a special ballot.
