Update: ATV Could Have Sparked Bush Fire
Special Lehigh Acres Gazette
According to the Florida Forest Service, 11-acre brush fire that threatened homes, Sunday evening was caused by an ATV.
Lee County Public Safety twitter page stated the fire began just before 6 p.m. near the intersection of near West 16th Street and Rush Avenue.
No homes were destroyed as a result of the fire, but approximately five residents did try to be proactive and extinguish the fire themselves while waiting for fire crews.
Samantha Quinn from the Caloosahatchee Forestry Center said the area where the fire occurred had been roller-chopped recently, meaning underbrush was cut mechanically, slowing the fire when it got to that portion, which helped stop the fire sooner.
A Florida Forestry spotter plane was also used to help direct firefighting efforts.
Crews will continue to monitor any hot spots in the area Monday.
